Infusing sugar syrup with fresh thyme gives this vodka lemonade sophisticated, seasonal flair.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 12 sprigs fresh thyme, plus more for garnish
  • 4 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 24 lemons
  • 2 cups vodka

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 2 cups water with the sugar and thyme; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; let cool to room temperature.

  2. Pour mixture through a fine sieve into a large glass measuring cup; discard thyme. You should have 2 cups syrup. Cover with plastic; chill.

  3. In a large serving pitcher, stir together lemon juice, vodka, and chilled syrup; garnish with thyme. Divide evenly among eight tumblers filled with ice; serve immediately.

Love Always Wins When It Comes To Your Skin

This Valentine’s Day marks the first celebration of the uber-romantic holiday since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in favor of marriage equality. The June ruling from the highest court in the land was unquestionably historic, giving thousands of committed same-sex couples the opportunity to find their happily ever after.

While many couples will be exchanging chocolates and roses this February 14, the holiday presents a great opportunity to have some real fun in the bedroom. But you don’t have to install a complicated contraption to pump some steam into your relationship. That said, if the swing is calling your name, then more power to you!

All you need to get your blood flowing is a few days of simple skin prep. This regimen works for tough, callused skin and sensitive skin alike! And trust us… these steps will leave your partner and your body’s largest organ thanking you.

Take these all-natural tips to heart and you’ll be well on your way to soft, glowing skin just in time for Valentine’s Day:

  • REVIVE. Exfoliating is an integral component to any balanced skincare routine. Exfoliating regularly will help you achieve smooth, healthy-looking skin, while also improving your skin tone. The key to a good scrub is ridding your skin of dry, dead and dull cells, allowing new skin cells to shine through. Consider using an organic coffee, sugar or salt scrub – depending on your skin type, of course. Coffee is a natural stimulant that’s packed with anti-oxidants and will help address cellulite-prone problem areas. Sugar, on the other hand, is a humectant that helps skin hold onto moisture. What’s more, it serves as a natural source of glycolic acid, which boosts skin firmness by targeting the deepest layers of your skin. Sea salt scrubs are also a fan favorite as they can help detox the skin and reduce inflammation. Reaching for your exfoliant 2-3 times a week is sure to do the trick.

  • REFRESH. In addition to reviving your skin with a good scrub, it is imperative to tone and moisturize your skin daily. Whether you have breakout-prone skin or tired, aging skin, a little toner and moisturizer go a long way. Toners help balance skin pH and keep it from becoming too oily or dry. That said, using the wrong kind can do more harm than good. Many on store shelves are full of skin-drying alcohols, added fragrances and other damaging ingredients, making all-natural toners the best choice. Consider using apple cider vinegar (treats breakouts), rosewater (calms and soothes) or coconut water (hydrates). Follow your toner with a moisturizer that only uses organic ingredients, such as aloe vera, green tea extract or vitamin E. Skin pro-tip: if it has ingredients you can’t pronounce, stay away!

RELAX. Once your skin is in tip-top shape, it’s time to start planning the big night. Are you over the cliché expensive dinners and cheesy greeting cards? Look no further than a luxurious, skin-soothing bath soak. The indulgent concoctions are a fantastic way to spend the romantic holiday – what could be better than soaking your cares away? Most soaks use magnesium sulfate, which helps draw toxins out of the body and relieve stress, plus essential oils that add a multitude of benefits. Behind The Sangria offers a heavenly selection of soaks to choose from, including Grapefruit Bellini, Eucalyptus Martini and Lavender Nightcap. The best part? You can enjoy these skin treatments solo or with your partner.

Your soft, revitalized skin is sure to get the blood flowing – your loved one won’t be able to keep their hands to themselves. Cheers to that!

P.S. Single lovers, fear not! You don’t have to be taken to treat yourself with some good old fashioned pampering this Valentine’s Day. Pour yourself a glass of wine and indulge!

Recipe: Frozen Candy Cane Cocktails!

Via TheChicSite.com:

I know that people don’t typically reach for a frozen blended drink in the winter… and to that I say, why not?! You’re warm in your sweater, your fire is burning merrily in the hearth, why not bust out your blender and pretend you’re on vacation instead of dead in the middle of winter?

The candy cane cocktail makes a lovely addition to your holiday cocktail party or just a nice treat after a long day.

Start by crushing up a few candy canes in a sandwich bag.

Pour the candy cane crumbs into a small a small dish, and then squeeze fresh lemon juice into a separate dish.

Prepare your glasses by dipping the edges into the lemon juice and then into the crushed candy canes so that they stick to the glass.

Set the glasses off to the side and then make the two different layers for the drink.

In one blender pour frozen cranberries, peppermint schnapps or peppermint vodka, ice and cranberry (or raspberry/strawberry juice, for a sweet drink). In another blender (or the same one just rinsed off), pour the lemonade concentrate, club soda, and ice. Blend both until smooth.

Pour into the prepared glasses, alternating between the two, to create a layered candy cane look.

Serve your candy cane cocktail with a straw and a small candy cane garnish. Enjoy!

Who Needs Cranberry Sauce?

MIXOLOGY 101: CRANBERRY MOJITO!

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it's time to start planning out your contribution to the annual family shindig. What could be better than a signature cocktail? Trust us -- you'll need one once your offensive uncle you see twice a year starts talking about the 2016 presidential campaign!

The recipe below yields 6 servings.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 24 oz fresh cranberries
  • 3 c sugar
  • 3 c water
  • 60 mint leaves
  • 6 tbs lime juice
  • crushed ice
  • 12 oz white rum
  • 12 - 18 oz soda water
  • fresh cranberries to garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Put the cranberries, sugar and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. Lower the heat to low and continue to cook for about 10 minutes, remove from heat before the berries start bursting. Should you have some of the cranberries burst, don't fret. Cool completely.
  2. Once the berry mixture has cooled, strain and discard berries.
  3. Put ~10 leaves of mint and one tablespoon lime juice into each glass. With the back of a wooden spoon or a muddler mash the mint.
  4. Add ice to each glass and pour 2 ounces of the cranberry syrup and 2 ounces rum into each glass.
  5. Top off each glass with soda water and float a few fresh cranberries to garnish.

Mixology 101: Honey Crisp Apple Sangria!

Screen Shot 2015-11-04 at 12.41.24 PM.png

Whoever said sangria is just for summer was clearly mistaken! Try this Honey Crisp Apple Sangria recipe and let us know what you think!

The below recipe yields 6-8 servings...

Ingredients:

3 cinnamon sticks (plus more for garnish)
2 honeycrisp apples, chopped
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 (750 ml) bottle red wine (I suggest a light-bodied Spanish variety)
1 and 3/4 cups homemade apple cider or store-bought
1/2 cup brandy
1/4 cup orange juice (or juice from 2 medium oranges)
juice from 1 lemon
club soda, to taste

Directions:

Place the cinnamon sticks, apples, and orange slices in a large pitcher. Add wine, apple cider, brandy, orange juice, and lemon juice. Allow to sit in the refrigerator for 6 - 24 hours. Taste; if you'd like it to be sweeter, add 1-2 Tablespoons granulated sugar, honey, or agave.

If you'd like a cinnamon-sugar rim (highly recommended), simply moisten the rim of your glasses with water, turn the glass upside down and dip it into a mix of cinnamon and sugar.

Pour in the sangria with fruit and add a splash of club soda (this unsweetened fizz is wonderful with the sangria!). Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired. Cheers!

Make ahead tip: Sangria is the perfect make-ahead cocktail since it must sit for at least 6 hours. You can also make it one day in advance.

Additional Notes:

Use a sweetened, unfiltered version of apple cider. Make your own homemade apple cider and use it here! Or buy an unfiltered version from the store-- it will be in the refrigerator section of your grocery store.

Feel free to add ice to your glasses of sangria. Don't add it directly to the pitcher - this waters the sangria down. Which, clearly, we don't want.

Bar Banter Of The Week

With all of the talk about the importance of regular cancer screenings, it’s equally important to know what you are putting on (and in) your body. Products available on store shelves are often ridden with countless toxic chemicals, carcinogens and ingredients that you cannot pronounce. These toxic ingredients then absorb into your skin, leading to adverse effects.

There is no need to expose both yourself and loved ones to harmful products when all-natural – and more effective – alternatives are available. Going organic keeps your skin and body fresh, fab and fierce.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every two minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer. This is unacceptable, and each of us must do our part.

During the month of October, 50% of all BTS Rosé Sparkler Toner sales will go toward the Breast Cancer Research Foundation! Click HERE to purchase yours today.

Natural Body Products Inspired By Your Favorite Cocktails

We’ve all had that experience of going to drug store and desperately trying to find a body wash to help clear our blemished skin. Or maybe you love using perfume or cologne, but hate that overwhelming chemical stench that’s all over your skin? Either way, chemical filled products from the store are sometimes not so effective at getting results. At worst, though, this stuff we buy can actually be harmful to our skin and overall well being.

That’s why my family started Behind The Sangria. BTS is a lifestyle brand that crafts homemade all natural body products that are inspired by our favorite drinks. It’s as simple as that. From the Grapefruit Mimosa Elixir Spray to the Dark ‘n’ Stormy Sugar Scrub, BTS aims to make your life better with a natural burst of excitement.

The concept for this brand all started when my mother Julie was making her own bathroom scrubs with honey and sea salt (now our Old Fashioned Sugar Scrub), and the rest of us made fun of her for putting food on her face. That was over five years ago. Slowly but surely, my whole family started using the honey and sea salt everyday in the shower, followed by a nice toner of apple cider vinegar (our lovely Appletini Facial Toner). We’ve all seen incredible results – from glowing and supple skin to those tingly exfoliation feelings.

After going through a year of personal tragedies in our own family, we wanted to share with the world something that always brought us joy – organic body care. It’s a simple change to the daily routine to replace those chemical products, but one that can leave you feeling healthier and better off in the long run. We post regularly what fun bazaars and events we’ll be working at, but you can always visit us on FacebookInstagram, or BehindTheSangria.Com.

Whenever you try one of our products, it will hopefully contribute to that Happy Hour 24/7 mindset in all of us! Cheers!
